Welcome to the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering — the only college in Kerala offering this unique branch of engineering, with an AI-integrated curriculum and a vibrant research ecosystem.

Welcome to the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally.

The Metallurgical & Materials Engineering Department started in 2012 and the B.Tech programme offers a comprehensive fundamental education in metallurgical engineering. There is an intake of 60 students for B.Tech per year. Amal Jyothi College of Engineering is the only college in Kerala offering this unique branch of engineering.

A branch that spans every engineering application

Since three-fourths of all chemical elements are metals, virtually you will be able to produce materials for every other engineering application. As a metallurgical engineering student, the programme provides an understanding of:

Core Learning Outcomes
Extraction from OresHow metals are extracted from their ores through pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.
Behaviour Under ConditionsHow metals behave under various temperature and environmental conditions in service.
Alloying for PropertiesHow they can be alloyed to improve specific properties for the development of new products.
Scientific ExplanationsThe explanations of new scientific phenomena observed in metals and alloys.

Our laboratory infrastructure

Current laboratory facilities are designed to support hands-on learning from the earliest semesters:

  • Heat Treatment Lab
  • Metallography Lab with optical microscopes equipped with digital image analyser
  • Mechanical Testing Lab with screw-driven universal tensile testing machine, fatigue testing machine and various hardness testing machines
  • Welding Lab with equipment for various types of metal joining

Foundry, Metal Forming, Corrosion and NDT labs are planned for higher semesters, expanding the hands-on experience as students progress.

Our laboratory is open to faculty and students of other institutions as well, to pursue their research interest in Metallurgy and Material Science.

Faculty expertise & research

The metallurgy faculties have expertise in physical, mechanical and welding metallurgy. With the experimental facilities available, students and faculty members are encouraged for quality and innovation in their research activities — across ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, composite materials, consultancy and failure analysis.
